TIPS FOR PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS - What to Wear
Selecting Your Outfit for your Professional Headshot Session.
What to wear for your Professional Headshots
- Don’t be afraid to look great! Wear outfits that you feel good wearing. If you feel like a rock star, you’ll look like a rock star and the confidence will show in your headshot. Don’t force yourself into something uncomfortable or ill-fitting that you would never normally wear. Remember to bring all outfits cleaned and steamed/ironed on hangers.
- We always love to see people in tops that match their eye color.
- Wear sleeves and a collared shirt if you can. It makes you look sharp and professional. If your job is creative, you have more leeway, but we still recommend sleeves. Big puffy sleeves or padded shoulders will make your shoulders look much larger so that is not recommended unless that is your look/goal.
- Conservative necklines tend to look better for business and are recommended for professional headshots.
- Your eye tends to be drawn to the lightest part of a photograph. If you are wearing white clothing, that will be the main subject vs you (We realize that we will have some of you in lab coats so this will be the exception). Be sure to wear a color that is darker than your skin tone if you have light or medium skin tone. If you have dark skin tone it's best to wear a mid-tone to dark color if possible. This helps the focus be on your face.
- It is best to avoid stripes, plaids and polka dots for headshots.
- Large logos can also be very distracting in photographs. Just take a peek in the mirror before you walk out the door and see if a logo on the front of your outfit is the first thing you see.
- Be sure to wear smooth undergarments, slips and smooth underwear to hide visible bra or panty lines.
- Eyeglasses: Please let us know if you prefer your headshot taken with your glasses on or off (or we can take both). Non-reflective coating on glasses is wonderful on glasses so we don't get glare from the off-camera lighting. It is extremely difficult to try and get rid of glare and reflections on glasses in retouching. If you wear Transitions, you may want to remove them since they can turn dark with the studio lights.
- Your headshots will reflect who you all are, so have fun with your style and show us who you are too.
